About

Am I Due A Refund is a free, independent UK site that helps people find out — quickly and clearly — whether they’re owed money by HMRC, their council, their bank, or their energy supplier.

Every year, billions of pounds sit unclaimed across HMRC, council offices, energy suppliers, and pension providers. Most of it stays unclaimed not because people don’t qualify, but because the rules are confusing, the process feels intimidating, and nobody tells you when you’re owed something. The system isn’t designed to volunteer money back.

We built this site to fix one part of that problem. Our 15 free calculators give you a plain-English estimate, in seconds, of whether you might be due a refund — and what to do next. No long forms, no upfront fees, no hard sell.

Who runs this site

This site is run by an independent UK-based founder who builds practical tools for everyday people. We are not a regulated financial adviser, claims management company, tax adviser, or law firm. Everything on this site is general information, not personal advice.

If you’re unsure about anything specific to your situation, contact HMRC directly, speak to a regulated adviser, or use one of the free guidance services listed below.

How we make money

We need to be honest about how this site stays free to use:

  • We earn a small amount from advertising shown on the site.
  • We may earn a referral commission if you choose to use a third-party service we link to (for example, a tax rebate company).
  • When we recommend a paid service, we say so clearly. You will never pay more by using our links — the commission comes from the company, not from you.

You can also claim almost everything on this site directly with HMRC, your council, or your energy supplier yourself, for free. We tell you when that’s the easier option.

What we’ll never do

  • Ask for your bank details, National Insurance number, or HMRC login.
  • Share your personal information with anyone.
  • Take a percentage cut of your refund.
  • Push you toward a paid service when a free one will do.
  • Make claims about how much you’re owed without showing you the maths.

Our calculators run entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored, sent to us, or used for any other purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Are you regulated by the FCA?

No. We don’t give regulated financial advice or handle claims on your behalf, so we don’t need to be FCA-authorised. We provide information and calculators only. For regulated advice, speak to a chartered accountant, tax adviser, or solicitor.

How accurate are your calculators?

Our calculators use the most recent HMRC rates, statutory thresholds, and published rules. We update them when the rules change. They give you a reasonable estimate, but they can’t account for every personal circumstance — your actual refund may be higher or lower depending on your full situation. Always confirm with the relevant authority before relying on a number.

Why should I trust this site?

You shouldn’t trust any single site blindly — including this one. Cross-check anything important with GOV.UK, your council’s website, Citizens Advice, or MoneyHelper (the free service from the Money and Pensions Service). We’ve tried to make our calculators easy to verify by linking to the original HMRC guidance for each one.

What do I do if your calculator says I’m owed money?

Each calculator tells you the next step — usually a direct link to the right HMRC form, your council’s contact page, or your supplier’s complaints process. You can claim almost everything yourself, for free, in 10–30 minutes.

Do you have a privacy policy?

Yes — see our Privacy Policy. In short: we don’t collect personal data through the calculators, we use standard cookies for analytics and ads, and you can opt out via the consent banner.
